Zero-THC: What does it mean?

What does ‘zero THC’ actually mean?

Great question. Up until now, all of oHHo’s CBD products have contained small traces of THC. When we launched oHHo, we made the decision to sell only ‘full-spectrum CBD’, which is the purest and most effective form of CBD. When we say ‘full-spectrum’, we mean that, when cannabis is extracted from the plant, the extract isn’t stripped of all its other therapeutic compounds, such as THC, CBG and terpenes (more on those below!). Keeping this group of compounds together means the CBD benefits are super-boosted - and this synergistic effect is known as the ‘entourage effect’.

Why don’t people want THC?

There are a variety of reasons. Some people don’t feel comfortable taking THC. Or their employer forbids it (think pilots and athletes). And geography makes a difference. Some countries restrict THC use. To give you an example, the UK has a 1mg THC restriction on any CBD product. We always knew the demand for a zero-THC product was there.

Is the process straight-forward?

Sadly not. Until now, if you were to remove THC from a full-spectrum extract of CBD, many other beneficial compounds were also removed. This means a waaaay less potent product.

So, how did you do it?

We’re glad you asked. Two years ago, we launched our own research project with University College London and John Moores University Liverpool. Our brief? To find a way to keep all the benefits of full-spectrum CBD, minus THC. And - drumroll please - after two years of intensive research, we have discovered the solution.

Which is?

Terpenes. Aka some of the most hard-working, unsung heroes in nature. Essentially, a terpene is an aromatic compound that makes up the scent, aroma and flavor in every plant on the planet. Cannabis terpenes offer therapeutic benefits and good-vibe psychological effects. And, when you grow cannabis outdoors in the living soil, the plant's chemical profile is unique to that specific location. So, a strain of cannabis grown in NY will have a different terpene profile to the exact same strain when it’s grown in Colorado. Magic, right?

Why are terpenes so important in this process?

Remember how we said it was impossible to strip THC without also stripping all the potent benefits? Well, our scientific research discovered we could keep hold of the benefits by first removing the THC, and then re-introducing specific cannabis-derived terpenes (aka the good stuff).

So, zero-THC doesn’t mean it’s less effective?

No! Our terpene-enhanced tinctures are packed with all the super-boosted benefits. In fact, this new technique means we are really able to customize our oils to focus on what our customers want. Our Daytime CBD oil increases focus and energy, while our Nighttime CBD Oil decreases energy and enhances sleep. And they’re safe for people who don’t want to use THC. Best of all? This scientific discovery means we are still able to continue our mission to deliver full-spectrum, all-natural, potent products to our community.
