In Conversation with Colleen Nichols

oHHo meets Colleen Nichols, the founder of the Direct Sales Growth Community, which is on a mission to change the perception of direct sales from the inside out.

Tell us how you got your career start…

Believe it or not, my career started in the mental health field, working with male inmates in prison! A far cry from helping women and men in the online sales space, but I use my degrees in psychology and mental health counseling every day! I got started in online sales in 2017 and found quick success (that I maintained for 5 years) before I set my sights on changing the industry that changed my life. I started @noshamesalesgame in July of 2020 as a way to let off some quarantine steam, and it grew to over 100,000 followers in the first year - completely organically! I used the momentum of my Instagram success and started a membership community, Direct Sales Growth Community, to help change the industry of online sales from the inside out.

What is the one thing you wish people understood about online sales marketing?

Being a human and connecting with people is more important than trending audios and going viral.

What does your average day look like?

My three sons (aged 8, 6, and 3) wake up before the crack of dawn, so that means I do, too. Lots of life is lived before the babysitter arrives at 8am, and then it's off to work (which is my home office.) Every day is slightly different, but it usually includes creating Instagram content, answering questions or hosting a training call in DSGC, and working on my book (with a Starbucks run in there somewhere…).

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received?

Always be a first-rate version of yourself instead of a second-rate version of someone else.

What’s your proudest achievement?

Writing a book. It's something I've always wanted to do, but it felt like too big a mountain to climb. Submitting my manuscript to my editor felt like a big deal. Come ask me again in January of 2024 and I'll say "publishing a best selling book."

What has been your toughest career challenge?

Being an entrepreneur for five years before anyone took me seriously.

Who is a face to watch in your community?

Sara Moon, Cara Lidberg and Cassidy Carrow. Sorry, it's a three-way tie.

How do you decompress?

I scroll TikTok. Sorry, no self-enlightenment here.

What advice would you give your much-younger self?

You're not fat. Other than that, you'll figure everything else out, I promise.

How did you get involved with oHHo?

Because of @noshamesalesgame and DSGC, I have the unique opportunity to be in "the know" with the network marketing field and, when several friends sent me oHHo's website, I was wildly intrigued. The product offerings, the overall vibe, and the compensation plan all checked my "modern day network marketing" boxes and not many do! Then I tried the products and was so pleased that they're as good as I'd hoped they'd be!
