With oHHo Fest is underway we are excited to share all of the learnings from Croptober and beyond! Earlier this month we talked all about Terroir, or the “taste of the place.” Today, we are excited to bring another word into your CBD vocabulary…TERPENES!
Terpenes are the organic compounds that provide aroma and flavor in cannabis and a variety of other organisms, including plants. They also influence the effects of cannabis by interacting with cannabinoids. Each cannabis plant has its own unique aroma because of its own distinct terpene content.
What others might not know is that terpenes are also thought to increase the healing properties of the plants! There are more than 200 terpenes in cannabis, which bind to different receptors in the body to provide an array of potential health benefits.
The most fun fact of them all–when you examine a dried hemp bud through an intense magnifying glass (the kind diamond dealers use) terpenes look like luminous crystals!
- Myrcene – believed to promote calming effects, has a peppery, spicy, balsam fragrance
- Pinene – may be used for pain, inflammation and anxiety, has notes of conifer trees, orange peels, rosemary, dill, basil and parsley
- Linalool – thought to enhance relaxation and calm, has a characteristic lavender scent with a hint of spiciness
Taste them yourself and let us know what you think!
