by | Oct 1, 2020 | People, Uncategorized | 0 comments

Harvest is a time of appreciating the forms and abundance present in mother nature, but often times we forget to extend that appreciation to our own bodies! While we all love a good spark up and the glorious sensations that come with it, the act of smoking don’t necessarily scream miss mindful & health-conscious…

Enter Omura, the next generation Heat-Not-Burn device designed with the ultimate smoking experience in mind. A combination of sustainability, precision dosage & quality flower, this dazzling cannabis contraption offers new wave technology with one particularly exciting feature: preserving the terpenes, the aromatic compounds naturally find in plants.

While terpenes are most notably associated with smell, they actually play a huge role in the overall wellness properties of cannabis, from regulating mood, quelling anxiety, and improving overall physical wellbeing. We had the opportunity to sit down with Omura Spokesperson Lakera Risper to discus how this state-of-the-art system has revolutionized the smoking experience in the healthiest way possible. Read our conversation below and don’t forget to shop the oHHo x Omura collaboration, here!

What brought you to your current role at Omura?

I’ve been in Cannabis for four years now, and all of the positions I’ve held from budtender to buyer, store manager to brand ambassador etc… prepared me for my current position. It gives me a unique advantage to relate to everyone in the dispensary. What really set my path in cannabis was seeing the positive effects it had on my grandfather when he was dying of cancer. Seeing his appetite and strength start to return in a matter of weeks was truly amazing and even though he died, cannabis gave us quality time—time to say goodbye.

Best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

If you are unhappy change the situation, and if you can’t change it for the better, leave it. This is the best advice because it can be applied to every area of your life.

What role do you think smell plays in overall cannabis experience?

The smell, or “the nose”, is really the most important element. Let’s say I’m looking for an uplifting sativa—when I open the jar I observe the bud structure but I really want to smell the terpenes Limonene and Pinene, as these are in higher concentration in sativa strains. The aroma is very distinct, sweet, and kind of fruity. Now a great Indica will typically be more earthy, almost skunky. A terpene that can give off this smell is Myrcene, typically found in higher concentration in Indica, which gives you that really relaxing body high.

Your daily wellness ritual/mantra?

My daily ritual starts with meditation, which usually involves a great sativa like Sour Diesel or a CBD strain like Lifter. Next I workout, but I’m a little lazy when it comes to exercise so it’s normally 30 minutes of reading. Taking an hour for self care in the morning prepares me to start my work day. I don’t feel panicked or rushed, I feel ready.

Describe the ethos of Omura is three words.

Precision & Purity.

Why are terpenes so integral to great cannabis products?

Terpenes are an integral part of any great cannabis product because not only do they help create your desired sensation, but they help you select your product to begin with as well. At Omura, we only work with full spectrum whole flower so you have the full terpene and cannabinoid profile naturally found within the plant. Terpenes work in tandem with cannabinoids to create what is known as the entourage effect. Terpenes can also modify how much of each cannabinoid is absorbed and modulate the effects. We love terpenes and our device is designed to let you really experience tasting all aspects of your flower—terpenes included! Whereas smoking a joint, pipe, or bong immediately burns off the terpenes, our device is zero combustion, meaning you get the true full spectrum experience.

How can you utilize a terpene profile to enhance cannabis experience?

Do your research. If you are looking for terpenes that have specific effects, there is tons of literature online. Terpenes can increase or decrease the amount of the psychoactive cannabinoid THC is absorbed. Some are even designed to treat particular conditions. As you choose your strains, definitely check out the terpene profile as some are designed for pain, inflammation, etc.

Your top 3 favorite terpenes?

The first would be Linalool, found in one of my favorite strains to relax without getting sleepy, LA Confidential

Another one would be Pinene, found in my favorite Sativa, classic Jack Herer. It gives off this fresh, woodsy scent with a little sweetness.

Lastly Neridol. This terpene is not as well known but is one of the common components found in the essential oil of various medicinal plants, like ginger and tea tree. Which could be very useful as an anti inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial.

2020 is the year you finally…

Go after everything I want to make happen, no matter what it is. The 1st half of this year taught me to focus and stay vigilant, even with major obstacles. In the remainder of 2020, I want to pay it forward by educating other women of color on cannabis for medical and recreational usage, as well as for financial stability.
